In my personal opinion ceiling fans are one of those
NECESSARY evils!
I Have to be honest..I DON’T LIKE FANS!
(or rather, I don’t like the look of fans)
with that being said, I don’t know what I would do WITHOUT mine:)
There are many nights I lay awake looking up at this fixture WISHING I had an AMAZING chandelier that would sparkle and create ambience and would tie the entire look of the room together,
BUT… summer hits and I am forced to surrender to the
look of the fan to keep cool . . . aughhh!!!
look of the fan to keep cool . . . aughhh!!!
So if I “HAVE” to have a fan in my room I want to at least like the color of the fan, RIGHT?
When I first started going fan shopping, oh some 5 years ago, they had VERY little in my price range of what I was looking for. I knew I wanted an all black fan or a Brushed Nickel fan with Black Blades. I wasn’t having very much luck…all I could find
brown, brown, brown!
For Example…
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that this fan is ugly, it’s just if you put this fan in a Home that hasn’t any brown elements,
you soon discover that a small thing becomes a BIG eye sore.
So…I took matters into my own hands!
I SPRAY PAINTED THE BLADES!
Yep, I have NEVER looked back!
it turned out AMAZING!
Here is what it looks like today!
Ahhhh… BLACK sooooo much better!
I personally feel that black blades have a tendency to blend more in an environment than brown.
(but that’s just me)
So…if you would like to transform your fan on a budget this is a Simple, Easy and inexpensive solution.
All you have to do is unscrew the blades;
you don’t even have to take down the fan, isn’t that GREAT!!
Happy Painting! 🙂
P.S. I also wanted mention that changing out the glass shades on your fan is a easy and expensive way to update the look.
You can find really great glass shades at any local hardware/lighting store!
ha! i did the same thing last week. all the finishes in this home are brass/gold- fans included! (ugh) after i painted the shades black and changed out the glass light fixtures, i don't even mind the gold anymore!
We live in Texas, so fans are a must here, too! We recently spray painted the shiny brass metal parts of ours in an oiled bronze finish and left the blades white. Looks great and saved lots of bucks!

Heidi,
Great idea! I feel the same way about fans. You hate the look . . . but can't live without them!

I, too, spray-painted my fans and I LOVE them. We HAVE to have them also (ugh…) so that was the ONLY solution! Everyone thought I was nuts, but they turned out great! Well, as great as ceiling fans get…;-)
I had no idea that you could spray paint the blades! We have a fan in our kitchen & the blades are brown but need to be black. Thanks so much for sharing this! Your blog is amazing!
I already can't wait to get home from work and get to painting!!! Whay didn't I ever think of this? Brilliant!
Be Blessed,
Amy
