THE PERFECT BED

 Today, I am super excited to share my secrets and tips on how to make your bed at home look like the display beds in designer store windows.  Do you ever find yourself asking the question
“How in the HECK do you maintain a bed like that in REAL life?!?”
Well . . . you are in for a TREAT today! 
First things First . . .
here is a Picture of my Master Bedroom
Step One: Get Ready
Throw everything to the end of the bed and take the time to freshen up the bottom sheet. I like to spray Febreze or yummy smelling spray on the sheet, so when I fall into bed at night ( Exhausted!) 
my sheets smell FRESH and CLEAN.  
(As much as I would LOVE fresh sheets everyday.. it just isn’t going to happen so..I like to pretend 🙂  
Step Two: The Top Sheet
If you are anything like me, I HATE top sheets and refuse to iron them so they can be used as a decorative piece of bedding. 
So, I just “forget about it!” and fold the wrinkled mess at the end of my bed!

Step Three: Blanket Over the Top
 During the winter, my hubby and I use a very comfy and thin duvet cover to sleep with.  During the summer, it gets too hot so we take it off.  
Tip: In these first few steps, you need to decide what is best for your own personal comfort.  
From this point on, bed making is All decorative and not so much functional!

Step Four: The Decorative Blanket 
You don’t HAVE to have a blanket, but for my bed, it added the element I needed to pull the colors all together. I got my blanket at Pottery Barn. It was a splurge, but when it gets cold at night, it’s always nice to have some extra layers.

Notice the fold in the middle of the blanket. This is on purpose; you want to be able to see the top of your sheets for decorating purposes. By folding the top blanket, it creates the perfect way of doing this.
Step Five: The Big Fat Puffy Duvet
NEXT comes the MOST important part of the entire bed. The BIG FAT puffy duvet. “The Bigger the Better.”  This duvet is not for use! It is the key to making the bed look like those in store displays.  What you see in the picture is the duvet folded in half at the end of the bed.  When I am getting into bed at night I just throw this fat duvet over the edge of the bed and leave it ’til morning!

 Step Six: Cover the “UGLY”
Next . . . the coverlet, quilt or whatever you want to use to cover all the “UGLY” underneath. 
Here, I have used a white coverlet I bought at T.J. Maxx for only $39.00!!!
 Notice the fold at the top of my coverlet.  
Another one of my tricks to cover the duvet below and still leave plenty of room for all the pretty pillows!!!

I used a patterned quilt on the top of my coverlet.  
I just folded it in half and laid it across the coverlet’s fold.  WORKED out perfect!!
Step Seven: All the Pretty Pillows
Next Comes the EXCITING part, the placement of pillows! 
On queen size, I always use 2 Euro Shams and 4 Standards with some sort of decorative pillows to match. 
On Kings, I use 3 Euros 4 Kings and decorative pillows to match. 
I also LOVE getting ideas from magazines as for new and exciting ways to place pillows.

Final Step: The Bed Skirt
Lastly, I am a HUGE sucker for bed skirts!  I feel like it’s the finishing touch to every bed.  Make sure to keep them “fluffy” and you’ll be all set to go!
Well, thats it!  Simple as Pie 🙂

 Now it’s your turn to create the PERFECT BED!

    Beautiful! Thanks so much for the tips, Heidi. May I ask where you purchased your toile coverlet, bed skirt and drapes, please? I have been searching far and wide for exactly the same thing and to date have found nothing even close. Most bed skirts I find are not full and fluffy 🙁

    Zolane, I bought all the toile items from Pottery Barn. The bedskirt is just fabric I bought from PB by the yard. I WAS going to sew it into a bed skirt but never got around to it, so my bedskirt is just the fabric ruffled up. Sad I know… But hey…It works.
    I got my curtains from Linen's and Things when it was still in business. I have found similar curtains on ebay. I hope that helps!!

    Thanks so much! LOVE the idea of just ruffling the fabric as opposed to all that gathering! The look without all the time sounds good to me plus I could always use the fabric for something else if I get tired of having it be my bedskirt.

    Ok..here is the run down of the master bedroom. The lamps are from Pottery Barn, the Nights are also from Pottery Barn. The paint on the wall is restoration hardware Sycamore Green. The headboard paint color I had colored matched from a Spray Can color called Summer Squash that I found at home depot. I hope that Helps! Thanks for asking 🙂

    I love this! Also, I LOVE your headboard wall. (I saw it first on the "one of those days" post. I am inspired! Did you use the barnwood for that too? We're moving soon and I'd love to do that to our master bedroom wall.     Thanks for the tutorial. Your bed looks amazing. Where do you stash all the pillows and bedding you don't sleep with when you get into bed though? They look like they'd occupy a lot of space and/or be in the way.

    Gorgeous bed! I don't know if I could discipline myself to that many steps in the a.m., but it is really pretty.
    Do I understand that you don't use a top sheet? That I could not do. I need to have something smooth and cool between myself and the blanket.

    Thanks so much!! It looks hard, but it truly is fast and easy to do. I totally use a top sheet!! I would die without one. The top sheet is right is under the duvet that I sleep with. So it goes top sheet, duvet and then my yellow blanket! Hope that helps 🙂

    Brockey,
    Yes you are right about the down comforter. I just say duvet to shorten things because in truth the down comforter is put inside a Duvet cover. It gets all so confusing so I figure that once the comforter is inside the duvet cover it become a duvet at that point 🙂

    I bought the sheets at Pottery Barn a few years back. Hope that helps..Sorry for my CRAZY way of explaining things!! 🙂

    I just discovered your blog when a friend emailed me your summer Alphabet project for kids- brilliant! Thanks for this great idea! I love your style. Not to be a Debbie-downer, but I noticed you mentioned spraying Febreze on your sheets. You might want to check out some of the chemicals that it contains before you make a regular practice of spraying in your home, much less where you sleep. Thanks again for your creative ideas and inspiring style!

    Hi! I'm new here….actually found you on Pinterest via your boys room…..I LOVE this yellow headboard…it has convinced me to paint my headboard yellow:-)

    It's a bright green but since I'm now painting my kitchen cabinets green I just kinda want mixed it up a bit in every room:-)

    Emilia,
    The great thing about a layered bed is just that, layers. Even in a hot climates a fluffy comforter really makes an impact on a bed. But at night you want something light to sleep with. If you live in a tropical area. I say use the comforter as decorative piece and discard the duvet and blanket ( like I have on bed) You can still get this look with only the top sheet underneath. Whatever is on top of the bed are use for show, and at night would just be thrown at the bottom of the bed or taken off!

    Does anyone know what to do with pillow shams that come with a comforter set, and the 1 1/2 inch or so border around the sham is floppy? Is there a way to stiffen it up without starch, or stuffing it with a little fiberfill?

    Thanks for the info – your house must be very warm for you not to sleep under the down comforter at night. We must be wimps because we're using TWO down comforters and it's only fall here in California. Anyways, love the yellow and color coordination you have going on.

    Oh NO!! Its beyond cold in Idaho! LOL…Durning the winter months I pair up another down comforter and a blanket. and on the VERY cold night I do use the BIG fluffy one. But normally thats one is just for looks. Wish I lived in a warmer climate like CA. You are so lucky, especially when it 20 below here 🙂
